Welcome to the online space of our HEARTWOOD Micro-Exhibition, featuring women in woodwork.

This little Rae Cabinet in Walnut was my first go at something I’d been eyeing off for a while: veneer marquetry on a tambour door. Turns out getting intricate patterns to work on a tambour is exactly as fiddly as it sounds — a lot of patience, a few deep breaths, and more than one “why did I think this was a good idea” moment. Handmade brass pulls tie the whole thing together, catching the light just enough to remind you this cabinet has a few tricks up its sleeve. Small in size, big on stubbornness — mine, not the woods.

Sara Smith, the daughter of a Master Carpenter, pursued her passion and relocated to Melbourne in her early 20’s where she completed a Diploma of Furniture Design followed by a Certificate III in Cabinet Making. Influenced by the sleek, clean lines of early 20th Century design, Sara lists Eileen Gray, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier of the Modernist Movement as her main sources of inspiration for her work at Smith & Rae Design.

All exhibition pieces purchased will be posted out on Monday 17th August.
